Dr. Ivan P. Damians
Dr. Ivan P. Damians is a civil and geotechnical engineer with nearly 20 years of experience combining academia, research, and professional practice. He holds a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering and Geo-Sciences from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where his work focused on the mechanical performance and sustainability of reinforced soil walls. He has also completed international research stays in France and Canada, and uniquely complements his engineering background with degrees in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona. Since 2007, he has been teaching at UPC, contributing to both undergraduate and master’s programs, coordinating courses on life-cycle analysis and sustainability, and supervising numerous theses and doctoral dissertations. He has authored 30 journal papers and around 75 conference contributions, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing geotechnical knowledge and sustainable engineering.
In parallel, Dr. Damians has developed a solid professional and research career. Since 2013, he has worked at VSL International Ltd. as a Geotechnical Engineer and VSoL® R&D Manager, leading the development and optimization of reinforced soil systems and supporting international projects. Since 2015, he has also served as Associate Research Professor at CIMNE, specializing in thermo-hydro-mechanical modelling for nuclear waste disposal, contributing to major international initiatives such as DECOVALEX and Mont Terri. Actively engaged in international technical committees (Eurocode 7, ISO, ISSMGE, and IGS), he has held leadership roles including Secretary of the International Geosynthetics Society and current Chair of its TC-Reinforced Fill. His profile integrates academic excellence, industrial impact, and global collaboration in geotechnical engineering.
